Art Therapy is specialized field of mental health, where clients are therapeutically guided to create art as a means for self expression, emotional processing, problem solving, processing trauma, developing insight and more. The best part of all is that no artistic skill or experience is required. I’m more interested in process versus product when doing art therapy with my clients. Not only does it access different parts of the brain that traditional talk therapy may not, but it also encourages a different type of expression and cathartic release for what may not be able to be expressed verbally, yet.
Holistic psychotherapy is traditional talk therapy using a holistic approach. Holism is looking at the varying aspects and parts to a persons life (physical, mental, diet, environment, spiritual)—integrating the mind, body, and spirit. Not just isolating the problem and treating it. This is a great option for those who are interested in how other life areas influence their mental health. Together, we will look at the past, present, and future to understand your presenting concerns. I also use many other traditional therapeutic modalities such as: cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and psycho-education. Holistic psychotherapy is available in-person or online to those living in Santa Fe or in the state of New Mexico.
Holistic coaching is similar to Holistic Psychotherapy, in that we’re looking to integrate the mind, body, and spirit in order to reach your coaching goals. This is a more directive and goal-oriented approach than holistic psychotherapy can be. While we will look at your history to better understand the present, holistic coaching is much more present-focused. This offering is available in-person to those living in Santa Fe or available online to those who live in the state of New Mexico or out of state or out of the country.
What’s the difference between Holistic Psychotherapy and Holistic Coaching?
Determine the right fit for you
It can be confusing to know the difference between the two. Psychotherapy is provided by a licensed healthcare professional and focuses on the past, present, and future and helps clients to resolve problematic beliefs, behavior, process emotions, trauma, and relational issues. Oftentimes, we’re looking at the past to understand what may be happening in the present moment that may feel problematic. A psychotherapist also has the ability to diagnose and treat mental health issues. The type of psychotherapy I offer is intended to be longer-term rather than short.
A life coach is not a healthcare professional and focuses on present issues. They help a client identify their present goals and ways to help achieve those. The process can be long-term or short term. While we may look at some historical influences in your goal setting, it’s primarily present oriented.
Why is it important to know the difference?
It’s important for a couple of reasons. First off, a life coach and psychotherapist have different types of training—one is not necessarily better than the other but there is a difference. Being a licensed psychotherapist, I have the ability to offer both psychotherapy and coaching within my practice. It’s also important to be aware of this, as state licensure for psychotherapists do not allow us (at this time) to practice psychotherapy outside of the state we were licensed in. Meaning, if you (the client) live outside the state of New Mexico, I’m able to offer you my holistic coaching services online. If you live in the state of New Mexico, I’m able to offer you either holistic psychotherapy or holistic coaching, in-person or online.
